The Promise of Spring

It is still winter in the upper midwest with its cold and snow. I am looking forward to the flowers and warmer days that are just around the corner. In this installment of the my newsletter I have another book to highlight that offers a wealth of knowledge for anyone interested in photography.

Book of the Month

Photography is a profession, hobby and pastime that is always changing and requires continuous learning. From the basics of exposure through the changes in equipment and new techniques there is always something for a photographer to learn.

When I started along my path to becoming a photographer I came across a great resource for new and experienced photographers, a website named www.betterphoto.com. The creator and idea man for BetterPhoto has taken his skill and knowledge of photography and offered it to everyone through his website, its features and by writing many books that help budding photographers expand their skills and expose their capabilities. The latest of these is my 'Book of the Month' for February. This book is titled, BetterPhoto Basics by Jim Miotke.

I have read this book, even though egotistically I felt I already knew much of what was going to be said. What I found is that I learned and relearned important aspects of photography that continues to help me in my work everyday. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in photography, from the absolute beginner to the experienced.

Photography is a visual medium and most photographers have embraced the internet quickly and whole heartedly. To have a worldwide audience where there was once only a narrow local audience is just too tempting. The fact that you are reading this is a perfect example. This e-newsletter is being read in Alaska, in Illinois, in Europe and in some places I don't even know about. I have been told that people forward it to friends and those friends could be anywhere in the world. My dream is that someone would read it on the Space Shuttle, (they get email up there!). The last mission is in space now so anyone who knows one of the crew, please forward it to them.

The beauty all around us drew me into photography and capturing that beauty in some way each time I pick up my camera is something I strive for.

Each month I get to share a favorite image with all of you.

This photo is one of a acoustic guitar from a local music store. The curves, color and patterns on the body make this an interesting photo study. Beauty is all around us. All we need to do is open our eyes and look at the world a little differently.
