January 2011
This is the first of what I plan as a monthly newsletter. My purpose with the newsletter is to deliver beautiful images, to find out what you need from me with a survey opportunity every so often and to let you know about interesting things I have found during the last month.
One of the great things about being in business is that I meet smart and talented people. Some of these people are my customers, some are known to me because of their work, many are my friends and I get to learn something from every one of them. My learning process is ongoing and exciting. It also keeps me young at heart even as I find a little grey hair sneaking into my life.
What is new this month?
In this onging learning process I find many resources that I find help me in my business. Recently I found a book that seemed to be directed at exactly the problems I have faced. This book is titled, The War of Art by Steven Pressfield.
I read this with the thought that it would help me get past those limitations creative types are confronted with. As I absorbed Pressfield's words I came to understand that it was not just 'us artists' that need to break through barriers to creativity, but everyone. Personal goals or professional goals, so called creative professions and activities or those not in the 'creative' realm, all can benefit from reading this book.
This is an easy read and in paperback form is inexpensive. I read the paperback version but it now comes in e-book form for Amazon's Kindle, Apple's iPad and Barnes & Nobles's Nook.
The Business of Photography
Many of you are familiar with my artistic photographs. Nature, details of machanical things and architecture or shapes and patterns that I see as I wander about with my equipment in tow. I try to capture striking images everyday because it energizes me. Much of the time the real business of photography is recording images that are used to communicate a message, sell a product or record an event. These are the more challenging of the images that photographers must capture. To me challenging is fun. These are sometimes from studio efforts as was "Vintage" which is intended to interest the viewer in having a glass of wine and buying a bottle or two.
Other photographs may be from locations shoots such as "Made for comfort" which shows an attractive and comfortable family room.
"Made for comfort" was to be used as a one of several photos in a real estate brochure. The variety of work I get to do allows me to apply a broad range of photographic and lighting techniques and challenges me to think of how best to deliver the client's message.
Photo of the Month
The beauty all around us drew me into photography and capturing that beauty in some way each time I pick up my camera is something I strive for.
Each month I get to share a favorite image with all of you.
